Starting at the gym can feel intimidating—I know it did for me.
I didn’t know what to do, where to go, or how long I should even be there.
I currently go to Planet Fitness, and one thing I really appreciate is how beginner-friendly it feels. It made it a lot less intimidating for me to get started.
However, joining a Gym is not necessary. There are so many ways to include easy activities in day to day life. Find something you enjoy doing. Your more likely to stick with it. Remember have fun! Stay consistent!
So instead of trying to do everything, I kept it simple. This is the beginner routine I recommend to follow.
đź’Ş Keep It Simple
I’m not doing anything complicated.
If you don’t have access to a Gym or just feel uncomfortable going. There is exercises you can do at home.
A good starting goal is just to:
- Move your body … (walk, swim, dance to your favorite music)
- Build a little strength … (this is very important as we age)
- Stay consistent … (make it part of your daily routine, have a friend to exercise with)
That’s it.
🚶‍♀️ Start with Walking
👉Having a good pair of comfortable workout shoes makes a big difference
OR
If walking outdoors is not an option
👉A home option is this treadmill.
- 30 minutes on the treadmill or a walk outside.
- Comfortable pace
- Nothing extreme
This is always a good way to start. Remember the more you move, the better you feel, the more calories that are burned.
🏋️‍♀️ Basic Strength Exercises
Strength training is simply adding more strength to what you already have.
Consider these key points that make this beneficial.
- Muscle is always lost when we lose weight.
- Strength Exercises helps regain the muscle that was lost.
- Gained muscle helps us be stronger and keeps from regaining weight.
- Strength Exercises make bones stronger and helps reverse Osteoporosis (bone weakness)
With that being said, you don’t need a gym to do strength exercises. I can recommend some ideas to get started at home. Here are a few.
👉These resistance bands are great for simple strength workouts
👉A weighted vest, which I recently invested in, is an easy option that strengthens your whole body.
At Planet Fitness
I focus on going to the gym 3 times a week. Giving a day in between for my muscles to recover. I use strength machines to help with posture and correct form. The routine goes like this warm up first, work on muscle groups, cool down. Total time 30 minutes. That’s it.
- Day 1 “Upper body Strength and Toning”
- Day 2 “Lower body Strength and Toning”
- Day 3 “Core Strength & Toning”
The cool thing about this is Planet Fitness has an app that guides you each step.
—I’m just learning and building confidence.
🎧 What Helps Me Stay Consistent
- Goals is something we all need to make, without commitment, goals can be lost.
- A friend that can support your efforts goes a long way.
- Scheduling and planning ahead is important. Plan to work out on certain days and stick with it.
- Having fun and be kind to yourself. Don’t take life to seriously.
- Remember your feet are important to take care of.
👉If you don’t already have comfortable shoes, this is a recommendation for foot wear.
❤️ Give Yourself Time
You don’t have to know everything right away.
You don’t have to be perfect.
Just showing up is a win.
